Enjoy an exciting walking tour of historic downtown Wilmington during the American Revolutionary War. Dr. Chris Fonvielle will discuss the importance of the Lower Cape Fear in the 18th century. View Wilmington's oldest standing building, circa 1740; the DuBois-Boatwright House from 1768; the Burgwin-Wright House built in 1771; and the earliest public burial ground where rests Cornelius Harnett, the "Samuel Adams of North Carolina." Learn about Great Britain’s grand plan to launch a military campaign against the Southern colonies by way of the Cape Fear River in 1776; the resulting and significant Battle of Moore’s Creek Bridge; the colony's firm commitment to independence; the British occupation and reign of terror in southeastern North Carolina in 1781; and the war’s aftermath in the region. Have you ever heard of the “Midnight Ride of Polly Slocumb”?
These tours will be held at 2:00 on Saturday 2/28 and Sunday 3/1. Limited tickets available to ensure an intimate tour with plenty of opportunities for questions.
