Reusable fabric gift wrap: Furoshiki style

Did you know that in Australia we use enough gift wrap at Christmas to wrap around the world 4 times!!! And much of the waste created from all of this wrapping is unrecyclable...

However, by using reusable fabric gift wrap we can reduce this waste and resource use considerably by using the same piece of gift wrap over and over again!

Kirsty Mate from ReTh!nk Studio will take you through this two-hour workshop to show you how to make your own double-sided fabric gift wrap using upcycled textiles and demonstrate how to use the gift wrap using the Japanese Furoshiki style of wrapping - it's easier than you may think!

Start your aim for a zero waste Christmas this year by making your own reusable and upcycled gift wrap!

This workshop is ideal for beginners (adults and children over 12) who know how to make a seam and use a sewing machine. You will also learn additional skills such as topstitching, how to neaten a corner seam and following a basic pattern.

What do I bring?

While we will have a selection of upcycled fabrics for you to choose from we also recommend bringing in your own upcycled fabrics to use if you can. Ideally suited are lightweight fabrics (polycotton linen is ideal), heavy twills, cottons and knitted fabrics are not suitable. Satin materials are good but can be difficult to sew with, especially for the beginner.

You will need at a minimum 2 x pieces of 65x65cm fabrics in contrasting patterns/styles to make a medium-sized gift wrap.

The ReDress Hub has its own excellent sewing machines for you to use but if you'd prefer to bring in your own, please feel free! However please also make sure you know how to use it!
