Join Dubuque County Conservation staff for an afternoon of prairie restoration at Sunnycrest Prairie. Volunteers will learn about the history and future management of the property, while assisting with valuable land stewardship work to restore and protect the natural habitat on the land. All equipment and ID skills will be provided, no previous experience is required.
At Sunnycrest Prairie, remnant hill-top prairies will be our focal point for the day. We will be removing invasive species such as buckthorn and round leaf bittersweet in order to open up sunlight to the ground, to promote the growth of native prairie plants. Volunteers will use hand tools such as loppers, hand pruners, and folding hand saws. DCCB staff will also be using these tools and may be running chainsaws on the premises.
Prepare yourself for steep and uneven terrain and thorny plants by wearing sturdy & closed toed shoes, long pants, layers, work gloves (we will have extras), water bottle, and any other necessary items for your personal use. This is a volunteer event geared towards individuals 18+. Youth interested in attending this event must be accompanied by an adult.
