About the event
The Pulmonary & Sleep Medicine Technology Dependence Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) is hosting Respiratory Care of the Medically Fragile Child, an educational course for professionals.
This course is designed for homecare nurses in the community (LPNs and RNs) who would like to expand their knowledge of invasive and noninvasive respiratory technology used in technology-dependent children.
This event consists of:
- A pre-test
- Three prerequisite online lessons
- One in-person day of lectures, hands-on training and simulation sessions
Lectures will be delivered by Technology Dependence Center pulmonologists, Dr. Howard Panitch, Dr. Danna Tauber and Dr. Stamatia Alexiou.

Online modules due: April 17, 2026, at 5 p.m.
In-person training: April 24, 2026
- Check-in for in-person event: 7:30 – 7:50 a.m.
- In-person program time: 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Objectives
- Verbalize important safety measures to be enforced during every shift of care.
- Recognize common invasive and noninvasive ventilator settings and how they affect the type of support delivered.
- Describe the interventions necessary for different types of ventilator alarms.
- List the variety of available airway clearance measures and the method for airway clearance depending on the type of respiratory technology ordered.
- Perform ventilator troubleshooting for the most common ventilators in use in the Mid-Atlantic Tristate area.
- Demonstrate a tracheostomy change along with appropriate care.
- Display understanding of how to respond to an emergency for a mechanically ventilated child
Accreditation Statement: Children's Hospital of Philadelphia is licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Health and accredited by The Joint Commission. This course will award 10.75 CE credit hours for license renewal.
