Research Zimbabwe

This summer, 11 Detroit-based artists and students at the College for Creative Studies journeyed to Zimbabwe and conducted artistic material research by partnering with artists, art communities, and art institutions to interact, collaborate, and exchange practices and ideas. This exchange program was organized through Sadza Space, the new home for the Zimbabwe Cultural Center Detroit (ZCCD).

The ZCCD Research Fellowship this year went to Sabrina Nelson who worked at an artist-run residency in Chitungwiza (Zimbabwe) called Animal Farm run by Admire Kamudzengerere, who has been a guest of ours several times here in Detroit. The other artists were part of a material research program called DETZIM in which we partnered with the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Harare, students at the college affiliated with The National Gallery, Dzimbanheta, the African Village, Ubuntu Village, Tengenge Village, the Chitungwiza Art Center, Mbare Arts Space, and artist studios Calvin Chimutuwah and Tapfuma Gutsa to name a few.

Saturday, Sep 21 we are pleased to host the one and only Njia Kai, director of some of Detroit’s largest festivals and iconic parks programming, alongside our incredible 2024 Zimbabwe Cultural Center of Detroit Research Resident Fellow and artivist Sabrina Nelson for a conversation about her experience in Zimbabwe with us this summer. Our DETZIM 24 artists and students will also be sharing documentation of their experiences.
