About the Seminar

How does intellectual property protection shape where companies choose to produce?

This seminar examines how the strength of intellectual property rights (IPR) influences offshoring flows between countries at different stages of economic development.

Using data on offshoring flows between 60 origin and 76 destination countries from 2000–2011, the study finds that stronger domestic IPR can reduce outgoing offshoring, particularly from developing countries, as firms are more likely to retain production locally. At the same time, stronger IPR protection in destination countries can attract incoming offshoring, particularly toward developing economies and in high-tech industries.

The findings highlight the complementary roles of formal intellectual property protection and institutional quality in shaping international production networks.

About the Speaker

Mery Patricia Tamayo Plata is a Distinguished Professor at the School of Finance, Economics and Government at Universidad EAFIT, Colombia, where she has been a faculty member since 2001. Her research interests include outsourcing, offshoring, global value chains, industrial organization, and regulation.

Her research examines the economic and institutional dimensions of firms’ participation in international production networks, with particular attention to offshoring, skilled employment, innovation, and productivity. She has published in journals including The World Economy, Industry and Innovation, The Journal of International Trade & Economic Development, and Economics of Innovation and New Technology.

She holds a PhD in Applied Economics from Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain.
