A research seminar talk by Dr Jonathan SCHIESARO (Italian Dept, TCD). ALL WELCOME!Between the second half of the sixteenth century and the late seventeenth century, alongside the consolidation of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, the descendants of some of the most renowned Florentine Renaissance artists (e.g. Michelangelo, Giorgio Vasari, Baccio Bandinelli), literates and historians (e.g. Niccolò Machiavelli, Francesco Guicciardini, Scipione Ammirato) started implementing a complex programme of promotion of their family’s memory through a revision of their documentary heritage, in order to celebrate the family lineage and ensure their own social advancement within the circle of the Medici court. The lecture accounts for the main intellectual and material operations carried out by these scholars, outlines the different methods of intervention on the documentary Nachlass and set them in the wider cultural context of the Counter-Reformation.
Jonathan Schiesaro is IRC postdoctoral fellow at Trinity College Dublin. After his literary, philological and historical studies in Italy and France, he obtained a PhD from the University of Zurich, where he worked within a project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. In 2023 he published a monograph on the writings attributed to the Florentine sculptor Baccio Bandinelli (Berlin, De Gruyter). His research interests focus on art treatises, private writings and historiography of the Italian Renaissance, with a focus on the Tuscan milieu. He also published on Dante and on the tradition of verses of praise and mockery surrounding the works of art in sixteenth-century Florence.
