Repurposing Energy Assets for a Just Energy Transition

Please join the and for presentation and discussion of the new research report titled “Systems-Level Repurposing of Coal Assets: Insights from South Africa, India, and the United States.” This report—led by Duke researchers—presents a comprehensive comparative analysis of coal value chain repurposing efforts in South Africa, India, and the United States. It focuses on transforming multiple components of the coal infrastructure—such as mines, power plants, transport networks, and terminals—into new interlinked industrial applications to support a just and holistic energy transition.


, senior lead for international energy transitions and executive in residence at the Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment & Sustainability and James E. Rogers Energy Access Project at Duke University, will conduct the presentation on the new report. Following the presentation, there will be a panel discussion featuring leading energy researchers, policy experts, and practitioners to explore the implications of systems-level repurposing for energy transition and economic development in coal-dependent regions.

Panel discussion will be moderated by , Director of the James E. Rogers Energy Access Project at Duke University.
