In 2015 and on a shoe-string budget, Michelle Roger created the #UpAndDressed series of high fashion self-portraits in and around her home in the beautiful Gippsland region. The images she created were the Disability Representation she had wished for, and offered both an invitation and a challenge to the fashion industry. In her photographs, accompanied by short form texts, Michelle’s gaze is bold and unapologetic, her poses dramatic, and her wheelchair and ornately embellished walking sticks are deliberately featured.
In a way that anticipated today’s Disability Pride and activism, Frida Kahlo blazed a path in using her art to represent disability without fear or shame, and in integrating disability and fashion in her mesmerising look. In this presentation, Michelle will share insights into her creative practice as an aging Disabled woman, like Frida working predominantly at home with her animal companions, to not only blaze her own path but to help other Disabled people feel seen.
