A FREE TICKETED EVENT OPEN TO THE PUBLICA growing body of research has demonstrated compelling impacts of music and the arts on health and the human experience. In Music and Mind, presented in more than fifty cities around the world, renowned soprano and arts and health advocate Renée Fleming shares the stage with leading scientists, physicians, and practitioners to offer illuminating discussions and share the latest findings about the growing field of arts and health. This 90 minute free event is designed for a general audience and is free to the public. However, attendees must reserve seats. Select yours using the seat map below.
Fleming will be joined by renowned neuroscience experts Dr. Daniel J. Levitin, Dr. Indre Viskontas, and Dr. James Jaffe, to discuss these exciting developments. Fleming will also preview her new anthology, Music and Mind: Harnessing the Arts for Health and Wellness, featuring chapters from Dr. Levitin, Dr. Viskontas, and many more leading scientists, artists, creative arts therapists, educators, and healthcare providers who highlight the powerful impacts of this work.
In addition to using music to better understand complex functioning of the brain, researchers have found music and art therapies to be effective tools in addressing effects of an ever-widening array of conditions: providing relief from chronic pain, enhancing speech recovery after stroke or traumatic brain injury, improving mobility of individuals with Parkinson's disease, improving memory and quality of live for patients with Alzheimer's, and more. And the impact of the arts on developing brains of children shows effects reaching beyond improved test results and scholastic aptitude to creativity and success throughout life.

About Renée Fleming:
Renée Fleming is one of the most highly acclaimed singers of our time, performing on the stages of the world's greatest opera houses and concert halls. Honored with the US National Medal of Arts, the 2023 Kennedy Center Honor, and five Grammy® awards, Fleming has sung at momentous occasions from the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony to the Super Bowl. In 2024, she stars in The Hours at the Metropolitan Opera and is touring her recital program Voice of Nature: The Anthropocene, inspired by her Grammy-winning album of the same name and with an original film by the National Geographic Society.
In recent years, Fleming has become a leading advocate for research at the intersection of arts, health, and neuroscience, and she has been named a Goodwill Ambassador for Arts and Health by the World Health Organization. As Artistic Advisor to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Fleming has spearheaded the Sound Health collaboration with the National Institutes of Health (NIH), in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), and she partners with other leading organizations and initiatives to bring attention to research and practice at the intersection of music, health, and neuroscience.
Renée is Co-Chair of the Johns Hopkins/Aspen Institute NeuroArts Blueprint and Founding Advisor for the Sound Health Network at UCSF, and her foundation has supported research projects including the NIH Music-Based Intervention Toolkit and the Renée Fleming NeuroArts Investigator Awards for early-career arts and health researchers. Renée's advocacy work has earned her Research! America's Rosenfeld Award for Impact on Public Opinion and the World Economic Forum's Crystal Award.
