Book, Music and Lyrics by JONATHAN LARSON

Rent is a romance musical, with music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson inspired by Giacomo Puccini's opera La bohème. It tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York's Lower East Side in the thriving days of the Bohemian East Village, under the shadow of AIDS.

Rent, which won a Tony Award for Best Musical and a Pulitzer Prize, among other awards, was one of the first Broadway musicals to feature bisexual and transgender characters. In addition, its cast was very ethnically diverse. Rent brought controversial topics to a traditionally conservative medium, and it helped to increase the popularity of musical theater among the younger generation.

The musical was first seen at the New York Theatre Workshop in 1994. On January 26, 1996, Rent opened in New York City off-broadway before moving to Broadway's Nederlander Theatre on April 29, 1996.[2] Rent has been successful on Broadway, where it had critical acclaim and word-of-mouth popularity. With more than 4,300 performances, it is the seventh longest-running Broadway show

One might think that now, 18 years after its creation, the messages of "Rent" may not be as relevant as they once were. 6 years ago, we may have even agreed with you, at least with the idea that we were collectively taking steps in the right direction. However, I would say as our nation has faultered in the recent half decade especially, many of the messages of "Rent" and Larson's overall hope for a musical that opened eyes, asked tough questions, and spoke to a generation are as relevant today as they were then.
