About this Event
Remnants of the Tanforan Incarceration
When an entire racial group was banned from the West Coast during
World War II, an ocean of objects was lost forever. Through an
examination of objects that have survived, Nancy Ukai and art director
David Izu explore the lives and stories of people connected to them on
the 50 Objects website. https://50objects.org/
In this program, Nancy will display and talk about selected artifacts with
Tanforan stories: Kay Sekimachi’s paper dolls, Kiyoshi Uchida’s Cal
diploma mailed to a horse stall, a secretly-packed box in Berkeley that
was opened in Tanforan to disappointment, Ibuki Hibi’s doll
immortalized by Dorothea Lange’s photograph and a handmade Quaker
quilt that was thrown over the fence to Shizuka Ina.
The event will open with a short musical performance by Naoko Amemiya and Lori Honjiyo.
Honoring Identity and Ancestors, through the Rhythm of Taiko Drumming
"One of the most important musical instruments of Japanese tradition are the taiko drums, known as the heartbeat of Japan. Two notable Bay Area musicians, Naoko Amemiya and Lori Honjiyo, will share their skills on the taiko and the bamboo flute or fue, bringing forth the powerful spirit of American taiko, grounded in the essence of its Japanese roots. Through taiko, fue and movement, they honor the artistry, activism and struggles of Japanese Americans and also pay tribute to their identity and ancestry."
