Discover the true story behind the 1918 massacre of 15 Mexican men in this small border town. 100 years later, the film asks what led to the events of that fateful night and reveals the tensions that still remain along the border a century later. PORVENIR, TEXAS first aired in 2019 as part of the PBS documentary series VOCES, which features the best of Latino arts, culture, and history and shines a light on current issues that impact Latino Americans.

In 1915, Jovita, a reporter, writer, and trailblazer for women’s and Mexican-Americans’ civil rights, interviews a mother whose son has gone missing while at the hands of Texas Rangers and vigilantes who have been targeting the Texas-Mexican community in the Lower Rio Grande Valley during a time known as “La Matanza” (The Massacre).
