Local Australian poet and long-term announcer Ben Hession sadly passed away last month. Ben championed many a fine band from the mid 80s to the end of 2025 - all on air at 2VOX FM and also Radio Skid Row 88.9FM. He leaves a big legacy and a hole not only for the Illawarra music community but also for Australia in general. Ben defined the true DIY independent spirit of both community radio, independent publications and was also a published poet. On Thursday 19th March from 8-11pm we will remember Ben with live music from Overnight Lows https://www.facebook.com/people/Overnight-Lows/61559848646675/ (feat. Andy O'Phee who met Ben at Radio Skid Row in the mid 80s. Andy also once played with Kev Carmody and Repeat Offenders).
Also on the bill is Vicky Rusina's new band Aviatrix who play original songs that make your heart soar. Vicky knew Ben via Radio Skid Row and played in Wimmin and Boys. Her new band combine members of Dear Lovely Death + the unique vocal style of Yulianto (Sin-Sin) Lukito on vocals
Peter Black will take stage after 9pm and perform a tribute to Ben of 3-4 songs. Ben helped unearth Blackie's solo profile on 2VOX whenever he came to the Illawarra. You may also know Blackie's two superb bands. The Hard Ons and Nunchukka Superfly, both renowned both locally and internationally. https://www.facebook.com/PeterBlackSolo/
On the reading front there'll be the wonderful Tug Dumbly (local awarded poet and musician) who has worked lots in radio, venues and schools, and founded a couple of seminal poetry nights in Sydney https://www.facebook.com/tug.dumbly/
Also featuring are the excellent talents of local published prized poet/authors Roberta Lowing, plus Niko Slavic who knew Ben from Wollongong before relocating to Sydney.
There's likely to be a few more reading so stay tuned for announcements.
Note, this is a floating lineup with varying times allotted for both music and poetry. There'll also be a flier that will be circulated in the coming weeks with the odd addition here and there to the lineup + times.
