Session #6
We all know what it is to cancel someone. And sometimes, the person being cancelled deserves it (think Louis CK or JK Rowling)! But what happens after? Should we just forget about them? Do we shun them from public spaces forever more? Or can they be “uncancelled”?
In this lecture, we explore what it means for someone to be uncancelled — and what it would take for uncancelling to happen. Drawing on philosophical theories about interpersonal forgiveness, this lecture examines how uncancelling can be thought of as a form of “social forgiveness”, where members of a community decide to restore their normal social relationships with a wrongdoer. This connection helps us draw conclusions about what needs to happen before a person should be uncancelled.
About the speaker: James is a postdoctoral research fellow at the National University of Singapore. He has a background in philosophy. He did his PhD at the Australian National University on the ethics of public shaming, and clearly can't let it go. When he's not thinking about ethics, he's busy playing pretend. Either on stage with his improv troupe, or in his mate's living room pretending to hunt dragons.
