About the Book
Remaking Democracy is a liberatory education project and guidebook for social change. It teaches how to analyze problems, consult desires, and design social interventions to grow participation and democratic power. Danielle Chynoweth and Elizabeth Adams offer analysis and strategy for sustainable social transformation, drawn from decades of organizing and teaching. This accessible and practical resource presents case studies alongside a design toolkit that equips readers to participate in creating the abundant worlds we want. Instead of offering a single solution, Remaking Democracy helps us create the abundant variety of solutions we need to survive and thrive.
Bios
Danielle Chynoweth is a media justice and housing rights leader who organizes with impacted residents to build power through strategic interventions that grow healing and hope. She works to end homelessness as an elected official. She co-founded the Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center and was the Organizing Director for Media Justice where she led successful national campaigns for prison phone justice and expansion of community media and broadband. Elizabeth Adams, PhD, is a composer, teacher, and caregiver, who has worked at the intersection of art, education, and organizing for over 20 years. Her compositions use sound to invoke social and political metaphors, and have been performed throughout Europe and the US. As a knowledge worker intent on creating the cultural change that will support social justice, she co-instigates Julie & Elizabeth’s Anti-Capitalist Concert Series, and organizes with the Crown Heights Tenant Union, and previously with Free University NYC, and What A Neighborhood! Norman Stockwell is publisher of The Progressive. Previously, for over 20 years, he served as WORT Community Radio’s Operations Coordinator in Madison, Wisconsin. He also coordinated the IraqJournal website in 2002-2003. In 2011, he regularly reported on protests in Madison for Iran’s PressTV and other outlets. His reports and interviews have appeared on Free Speech Radio News, DemocracyNow!, and AirAmerica, and in print in Z Magazine, the Capital Times, AlterNet, Toward Freedom, the Tico Times, the Feminist Connection, and elsewhere. He is co-editor of the book REBEL REPORTING: John Ross Speaks to Independent Journalists. Hamilton Books/Rowman-Littlefield.
Andy Gricevich is smiling at the sochan and wondering about this third person. It seems he's spent a lot of time making poems, music and theater--most often in collaboration--and performed such things widely in living rooms, festivals, big demonstrations, and his sleep. He works with fermentation and foraging (as What Got Gathered), does rangering at a gorgeous city park, offers nature connection mentoring, and helps people with exotic cheese. He lives in Madison with his kids and partner and wanders among the wonderful things they bring to life.
