You are cordially invited to join us for the Minneapolis premiere of the nationwide public television documentary, "Religion, Racism & Reconciliation" in which Calvary Lutheran Church congregants and clergy play a key role. Also, prominently featured are Rev. Jim Bear Jacobs, and Dr. Kelly Sherman-Conroy of the Minnesota Council of Churches as well as former CEO, Dr. Curtiss DeYoung. Minneapolis was not only an important inspiration to the film because of its response to the murder of George Floyd, but as a national event it was a wake up call that shook the United States to refocus on the crisis of racism in this country. The film received a grant from The Margaret A. Cargill Foundation at the Saint Paul & Minnesota Foundation.
“Religion, Racism & Reconciliation” is a ground-breaking documentary that explores the ways in which racism intertwined with American religion. It follows the stories of individuals and communities of faith who are engaged in addressing the issues of systemic racism, such as - voting rights, income inequality and mass incarceration.
We hear from a broad range of academic and religious luminaries who provide historical and sociological perspectives on the contradiction of an American society that values individual freedom and equality while ignoring the realities of slavery, segregation and racism. The documentary shows that while religion plays a part in our racial division, it also is a meaningful force in our nation’s healing and reconciliation.
The role that communities of faith must now play is in the hard work of reconciliation if we are a people who follow the teachings of Christianity Judaism and Islam.
Filmmakers, Gerald Krell and Adam Krell will be attending the event and taking part in a Q&A after the screening.
Many thanks to our co-sponsors Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, First Universalist Church of Minneapolis, Anna Stamborksi, Dana Neuhasuer, Joy and Ben McDonald Coltvet.
