"Reimagining Housing for Older Adults - Ideas and Actions to make Housing Available, Affordable, and Accessible."

Adults 60+ make up a large and growing segment of the Montgomery County population, with the county’s older adult population set to outnumber youth by 2030. There is also a growing recognition of the unique and rising needs of older adults, at all income levels, for available, affordable, and accessible housing. For older adults at lower to moderate income levels, there are few housing options that are available and affordable and that also provide the accessibility necessary to meet the needs of both owners and renters who require accommodations to age in place such as wider doorways, zero incline entries, lifts, and grab bars. The Commission on Aging’s public forum seeks to address these issues via sharing and discussion centered on five key questions: Engaging keynote speakers, discussions, and Q & A will center on five key questions:

What headway has been made since the 2018 report titled “Meeting the Housing Needs of Older Adults in Montgomery County”?

What else can and should county stakeholders (including builders and developers) do:

To increase adequate supply of housing options in the desired locations to age in place – AVAILABILITY?

To keep housing costs that are at or less than 30 percent of household income -- AFFORDABILITY?

To improve accommodations within a housing unit and to enable better environments for transportation, shopping, connectivity, and community service – ACCESSIBILITY?

What are the impediments to progress (from the public and private sectors, including builders)?

What levers and programs, traditional and innovative, can county stakeholders use to overcome them?

How can county stakeholders encourage public and private, for profit and not for profit, sectors to work cooperatively to develop imaginative legislative, regulatory, fiscal, and construction design approaches to meet this critical and growing need for the older adult population?
