About this Event

Welcome to the Refugee Day Poetry Show!

Join us at Busboys and Poets for an afternoon of powerful words, moving music, and inspiring discussions. Celebrate the resilience, contributions, and creativity of refugees through poetry.

Experience the beauty of language and the strength of the human spirit as poets share their journeys through verse. It's an afternoon you won't want to miss!

What:

This poetry show will feature young poets, musicians, and refugee advocates in honor of World Refugee Day (June 20th) and International Refugee Week (June 17th-23rd). The poetry show aligns with the U.N. World Refugee Day festivities and will offer a unique perspective on  this year's theme: "OUR HOME."

Why:

  • Tribute: Celebrate the resilience and contributions of refugees.
  • Awareness: Bridge the gap between refugees and the American public, raising awareness of the global refugee crisis.
  • Action: Inspire attendees to support displaced persons and consider ways to help resettled refugees reach their full potential.

Proceeds will support the 2025 Refugee Youth DC Summer Camp, offering a transformative experience for African youth with refugee backgrounds through an immersive tour of Washington, D.C.  The summer camp will help shape their understanding of global dynamics, democracy, and development, offering valuable insights into U.S. government functions and its ties to their countries of origin.

Why Me (Bertha Nibigira):

As a former refugee from East Africa with a background in international development, peacebuilding, and youth empowerment, I bring firsthand insights into the refugee experience. I am committed to driving positive change within the U.S. refugee community and globally. I see many opportunities to address the challenges of the refugee crisis through the intersection of poetry, youth, and peacebuilding. Check out my blog and social media pages to see more of my work.

Join us at Busboys and Poets for an evening of reflection, solidarity, and art. See you there!
