Get ready for a movie night under the stars at Sigma Sigma Commons! Join us for REELS ON WHEELS, where we'll be showcasing some mind blozing films on the big screen. Pack your blankets, we have the popcorn, and bring your friends for a fun evening outdoors.

On Campus Green Across from Sigma Sigma CommonsThese program of short films features films chosen by UC Film & Media Studies students from the best films at the 2024 Cindepedent Film Festival collection of the Spira film cooperative in Quebec City. Each thematic program is just over an hour and can be enjoyed in its entirety or in part. Stop by for free popcorn and a study break! Stay for some or all of the films.Spira is a cooperative that supports and fosters creation and production in independent filmmaking and distributes film works to ensure their promotion. Spira aims to forward equity, openness, and collaboration and to give voice to often untold and overlooked stories. UC students participating in the annual August Cinema Study Tour Canada visit Spira to view and discuss films made and distributed by the coop with the staff and directors.Sponsored the Cindependent Film Festival, UC School of Communication, Film, and Media Studies, and the UC Niehoff Center for Film & Media Studies

DAY 1, Oct. 9: Threads of Connection: Stories of Love and Loss

This series of films offers a journey through the emotional ups and downs of human relationships. From the tender intimacy of love, to the deep pain of loss, to the small moments of connection that sustain us in life, these films explore the complex threads that bind us together. They show how relationships shape, strengthen and challenge us as we reorient ourselves in the midst of loss and memory. With stories that are sometimes melancholy, sometimes humorous, we experience the fragility and power of human connection in all its facets.

DAY 2, Oct. 2: Becoming Ourselves: Journeys of Identity and Change

This collection of films takes us through the multifaceted processes of self-discovery, personal growth and dealing with social challenges. From the search for acceptance and love in the LGBTQ+ community, to coping with bullying and identity crises, to loneliness and the longing for human connection, these films capture the fragility and strength of human experience. The stories show us how we develop through pain, isolation and transformation into who we really are – always searching for our place in the world.

Each film offers a unique perspective on the relationship between humans and the environment, impressively capturing both individual struggles and the beauty and power of nature.

DAY 4, Oct. 24:AUTOPOEISIS: Humanity and the Biosphere

In essence, autopoietic systems are self-organizing with the ability to reproduce themselves. Everything originates from the biological cell: creation, destruction, and transformation.
