About this Event
Featuring a breakout performance from Toni Collette (Hereditary, Little Miss Sunshine), MURIEL'S WEDDING follows socially awkward Muriel Heslop (Collette), who wants nothing more than to get married. Unfortunately, due to her oppressive father, Muriel has never even been on a date. Ostracised by her more socially adept friends, Muriel runs into fellow outcast Rhonda Epinstalk and the two move from their small Australian town to the big city of Sydney, where Muriel changes her name and begins the arduous task of redesigning her life to match her fantasies.
The feature directorial debut for New Zealand filmmaker Jane Campion (The Piano, The Power of the Dog), SWEETIE follows its title character; a plump, lively and somewhat delusional young woman, standing in sharp contrast to her wiry and gloomy sister, Kay, a sullen factory worker. Kay is pulled out of her day-to-day existence by Sweetie's return to their town, and the girls attempt to reconnect with their parents, Flo and Gordon, who are undergoing serious marital problems. As the family spends time together, their many issues rise to the surface.
Reel Rippers is a Toronto-based film collective celebrating the best of cult cinema with a current focus on Australian titles.
