As May approaches, marking Mental Health Awareness Month, the Reel Mind Film Festival gears up for its return, presenting a powerful program under the theme “Women’s Mental Health Narratives:
Strength in Struggle.” Held at the iconic Little Theater, this year’s festival promises to captivate audiences with its lineup of poignant films and thought-provoking discussions.
Kicking off the festival on May 14th is the Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner from 2023, “The Eternal Memory.” This Chilean masterpiece delves into the intimate journey of Augusto and Paulina, a couple whose lives are forever altered by Augusto’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis. Through their enduring love and unwavering humor, the film offers a profound exploration of identity, memory, and the resilience of the human spirit.
Continuing the narrative on May 21st is “Being Michelle”, a remarkable film documenting the extraordinary journey of Michelle, a deaf and autistic woman who overcame incarceration and abuse within an unforgiving system. With the support of her mentor, Kim Law, Michelle finds her voice and strength, using art as a catalyst
for healing and redemption. This portrayal sheds light on the enduring bonds between women navigating adversity and striving for healing within a broken system.
Wrapping up the festival on May 28th is “A Bullet Pulling Thread,” a strong reminder of the tragic death of Daniel Prude and its reverberating impact on our community. This Canadian film follows the award-winning quilter Marilyn Farquhar, whose brother was killed by the police during a mental health crisis. Through
Marilyn’s perspective, audiences are invited to witness the devastating consequences of police violence and the resilience of those affected.
Each screening will be followed by a panel discussion, providing audiences with an opportunity to engage directly with subjects from the films and experts in the field of mental health advocacy. Additionally, attendees can meet Marilyn Farquhar at the special quilt exhibit at The Academy of Medicine, prior to the screening of the film “A Bullet Pulling Thread”. She will also join the panel discussion after the film.
