This workshop will focus on the sgraffito technique used by 18th and 19th century Pennsylvania German potters to make expressive designs in their folk art pottery. Sgraffito means to “scratch” and workshop participants will draw and scratch a design on a redware plate. Participants can choose a traditional Pennsylvania German design or create their own! No experience required. One 10" Plate is included in the class fee. Participants have the option to sgraffito an additional 7” or 10′′ redware plate coated with white clay slip. Additional plates can be purchased: 7" $38 and 10" $50; limit of 2 plates as time permits. The plates and the sgraffito tools and books for ideas are provided or bring your own. After the workshop, the plates will be dried, glazed and fired - this takes 4 to 6 weeks. Participants will be notified when plates are ready to be picked up in the Landis Valley Museum Store. If you need your plate shipped to you there will be a $12 shipping charge paid directly to Denise.Please bring a lunch. Museum Store Second Floor, there is one flight of stairs.

All Sales are final. No Refunds. Proceeds Benefit the Museum. After the workshop, the plates will be dried, glazed, and fired - this takes 4-6 weeks. Participants will be notified when the plates are ready. Pick up finished work at the workshopsite, at the studio in Macungie by appointment or shipped to participant for an additional cost.
