Reducing Gun Violence: A Conversation
In a conversation led by The Vallejo Sun reporter Sebastien Bridonneau, expert panelists will discuss: What does it take for city government to launch and maintain a gun violence reduction effort that lasts?
The Bay Area is full of great examples of gun violence efforts that have succeeded in bringing down their city’s homicide rate. This panel will be a way for experts and leaders to convene and share their insights.
Sam Vaughn, from Richmond’s Office of Neighborhood Safety, has been overseeing his office’s violence intervention efforts for over a decade. Last year, Richmond had its lowest homicide count on record.
Jason Corburn is a UC Berkeley professor of Public Health who focuses on studying violence reduction measures. He has previously worked in Vallejo and Richmond analyzing data and authored a book on Community Violence Reduction.
Cassandra James is a Solano County Supervisor, a proponent of gun violence reduction solutions, and North Vallejo resident.
The discussion will focus on solutions reducing violence adapted in other cities and how Vallejo can adopt them here.
The aim is to share insights on how to run a violence reduction program long-term; involve community; and achieve lasting results reducing violence.
After a moderated discussion between the experts, the floor will open for a Q&A with the audience.
The panel discusion will draw from the Vallejo Sun's series reporting on Vallejo's previous and current gun violence reduction effort.
