WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

The University College of Estate Management (UCEM) is offering a free 2-hour workshop for KS3 learners (e.g. sustainability or wellbeing councils or other interested students).

Learners will take part in redesigning a real local building or space with sustainability and wellbeing in mind.

The workshop will cover the following areas:

Curriculum areas: We will cover relevant areas of the Geography KS3 curriculum, including materials, energy sources, waste management, human needs and community.

Real-world problem-solving: Students will consider a selection of real Reading buildings and spaces and work in groups on proposals to redesign the sites. The students will consider how to make the space or building sustainable and how it could contributes to wellbeing and meet the needs of the local community. They will apply earlier learning on materials, energy, waste management and community needs.

Group proposal and presentation: Students will present their ideas at the end of the session and a live artist will bring student designs to life to show participating schools the impact of their students’ work via an artistic impression of their ideas.

More about the workshop:

Despite its importance, the impact on people’s wellbeing isn’t always a priority when designing a space. As a society and as individuals, we often overlook the impact of our surroundings on our wellbeing. Through this workshop we will challenge students to explore what wellbeing means to them and their local community and consider how a building can support that community.

As well as being a fun and creative activity, students will practise valuable skills such as teamwork, problem-solving and presentation skills, and get an introduction to the built environment sector.

The workshop is part of the Reading Climate Festival, which runs from 8 to 21 June 2024 and supports Reading’s journey to net zero.
