Join us during Red Bull Dance Your Style Weekend for a special workshop: Battle Skills w/ LaTasha Barnes & Junious "House" Brickhouse
About this Event

Take your skills to the next level! In this Battle Skills workshop, you'll focus on specific strategies to improve the way you battle, while also learning how to entertain the crowd. After learning some specifics, the duo will put you to the test in a mock Dance Your Style-like battle to showcase everyone’s newfound skills.

Join us as we celebrate dance and keep the Red Bull Dance Your Style Weekend going strong with 3 workshops back to back at the Dance Institute of Washington! RSVP at the link to reserve your spot - we suggest arriving 20 minutes before the start of the workshop. Please note, all participants will be required to fill out a release waiver onsite. NOTE: This workshop is for participants 16 and older; if you are under 18, you will need a parent or guardian on-site to sign the release form.


IMPORTANT NOTICE: DIW will require all participants to fill out a COVID-19 Daily Screening Form the day of as well as requiring masks at all times when not activily eating or drinking. We will send out the Daily Screening Form the morning of the workshop as we suggest filling this out before you arrive onsite.

About the Instructors:

LaTasha Barnes:

LaTasha Barnes is a Bessie Award nominated, globally celebrated artist, educator and Tradition-bearer of Black Social Dance forms including but not limited to Authentic Jazz, Lindy Hop, House Dance, Waacking, and Hip-Hop. Her virtuosic skills make her a collaborator to dance artists and organizations throughout the world. Armed with her Master's in Ethnochoreology from New York University Gallatin School her continuing research aims to bridge the gaps between communities of practice, academic cultural dance. LaTasha serves as Asst. Prof. of Dance to Arizona State University School of Music, Dance and Theatre, and Visionary/ Artistic Director to the critically acclaimed exploratory dance work "The Jazz Continuum". LaTasha's ultimate aim is to inspire all to the mantle of æffective artivism in their creative expressions and daily lives.

Junious "House" Brickhouse:

Junious “House” Brickhouse is an internationally established educator, choreographer, and cultural preservationist with over 30 years of experience in Street Dance Culture. As the lead of Assassins DC, Director of Next Level, and Founding Executive Director of Urban Artistry Inc, Junious has inspired and created a movement of artists dedicated to the preservation of street dance culture, specifically within communities of practice.


About the Venue:

The Dance Institute of Washington - DIW is the leading minority-led dance equity organization in the DMV, supporting students from underserved communities and securing top DC arts foundation funding. DIW performs multiple times annually at the Kennedy Center and THEARC as well as at multiple venues and festivals around the region and country. DIW offers a holistic set of extra-curricular key services to support their students including physical therapy, nutritional seminars, and career development training, along with arranging college tours for prospective students.
