Recycled Fashion Reboot

It's been said that we have enough clothes already in existence to dress the whole world for the next 100 years. How can we reduce the demand for garments that require new material and cultivate our unique personal style at the same time?

Each student will leave class with a few new techniques under their belt for reinventing existing garments and creating new ones using rescued textile material. Students are encouraged to bring any clothing that they would like to mend, reinvent, or recycle into something new. This clothing/material can be something you already own, found material, or items from a thrift/re-use store. We will also have a clothing swap available to participants - feel free to bring donations and take some new-to-you items home with you!

The goal of the workshop is to re-invent clothing/fabric into something fun and usable that diverts textiles from the waste stream rather than purchasing new material.

Instructor Brianna Gribben is an artist born and raised among the pine trees and sand hills of North Carolina. She creates as a way to understand herself, connect personal and collective narrative, and to breakdown cultural notions of gender, beauty, shame, and the grotesque. She uses a variety of techniques including: quilting, drawing, collage, ceramics and print-making. Her work is fueled by an insatiable curiosity about a variety of subjects. Her interests and inspirations include southern culture, radical acceptance, self-portraiture, anti-oppression theory, history, science, and zines.
