About this Event

INSIGHTS Public Lecture: Sounding the Angel: Recording the grassroots memorial site at the Angel of the North by Professor Anne Whitehead and David de la Haye
For some time there has been a grassroots memorial site in the small stand of trees at the feet of the Angel of the North. A year-long project has recorded the memorial through sound, combining interviews with people who have left tributes, field recordings of the site, and the voice of the Angel. We ask what the Angel means to those who commemorate their loved ones there, and how the site helps them to navigate grief.

Biography
Professor Anne Whitehead

Anne Whitehead is Professor of Modern and Contemporary Literature in the School of English at Newcastle University. Her current research explores contemporary representations of grief. Her project documenting the grassroots memorial at the Angel of the North sits alongside a former project working with parents who had lost a twin at birth. Anne also researches the grief of losing a loved one to suicide, drawing on personal experience.
David de la Haye

David de la Haye is an ecological sound artist, composer, bassist and music technician. A PhD student in the Department of Music at Newcastle University, he is interested in how listening beyond human perception changes our relationship to the world around us. David primarily explores how underwater listening could raise the cultural value of aquatic environments.
