National Record Store Day 2024 is being held this Saturday, April 20th (4/20), when hundreds of independent Record Stores around the country will celebrate the unique culture and special role they play in their communities. Bozeman’s Cactus Records & Gifts, an iconic Bozeman retail staple for over 50 years, will open at 9am for Record Store Day (1 hour earlier than usual), to give customers early access to the over 200 special edition limited Vinyl, CD, and cassette tape releases that come out that day. The festivities will also include live music from 11am to close, free libations & food, giveaways, prizes, sales & more.
Some of this year’s most-sought-after special Record Store Day releases come from 100 Gecs, The Beatles, David Bowie, Buena Vista Social Club, Sabrina Carpenter, Cheech & Chong, Nat King Cole, Daft Punk, Death Cab for Cutie, The Doors, The English Beat, Fleetwood Mac, The Jerry Garcia Band, Freddie Gibbs and Madlib, The Grateful Dead, G Love & Special Sauce, Mudhoney, Nas, Willie Nelson, Paramore, Pearl Jam, The Pixies, The Ramones, The Replacements, The Rolling Stones, Gil Scott-Heron, Slum Village, Joe Strummer, Talking Heads, Wilco, Noah Kahan, The Meat Puppets, Noah Kahan with Olivia Rodrigo, and many more. Live music performances at Cactus will come from The JK Connection, The Waiting, Michael Kirkwood, Trust Sara, Victrola Voila!, Cap’n DH Billy of Bluebelly Junction, and Heykay Okay. At 11am The JK Connection (musical vehicle for singer/songwriter/author Jonathan Kennedy) plays solo experimental acoustic music; at 12 noon The Waiting will bring an intimate celebration of the music of Tom Petty; at 1pm Michael Kirkwood offers loop-based guitar ; at 2pm Trust Sara brings guitar and synth-based pop & rock; at 3pm jazz trio Victrola Voila! will perform Django Reinhardt-style swing music; at 4pm Cap’n DH Billy will perform songs from the repertoire by his band Bluebelly Junction made up of “spicy originals, mind-bending mash-ups, and top-shelf covers,” and at 5pm, the day of live music will be topped off by ska/punk band Heykay Okay. Cactus Records & Gifts, having left downtown after 50 years, is now located across from The Gallatin Valley Mall, between The Montana Science Center and Rook’s Games & More, at 2742 W. Main St.
