David Barclay présente un montage sonore composé d’une collection de sons sous-marins recueillis au cours des vingt dernières années. Certains enregistrements ont été réalisés dans des lieux incroyablement reculés : fosses océaniques profondes, champs de cheminées hydrothermales ou sous la banquise arctique, tandis que d’autres proviennent de rivières, de ports et de plages urbains plus familiers.
Ces sons s’affranchissent de leur analyse habituelle, qui vise à révéler des informations quantitatives sur l’océan et ses habitants, pour être appréciés tels quels.
David R. Barclay est professeur au département d’océanographie de l’université Dalhousie à Halifax, en Nouvelle-Écosse. Ses recherches portent sur la modélisation et la mesure des propriétés spatiales et temporelles du bruit ambiant dans l’océan, dans le but d’étudier les mécanismes naturels qui génèrent les sons sous-marins ainsi que les propriétés et la variabilité des environnements océanographiques à travers lesquels le son se propage. Il a réalisé des enregistrements dans la baie de Fundy, au fond de la fosse des Mariannes et tout au long du Mississippi.

David Barclay presents a narrative mix assembled from a collection of underwater sounds collected over the last twenty years. Some recordings were made in impossibly remote places; deep ocean trenches, hydrothermal vent fields, or under the arctic ice, while others are from more familiar urban rivers, harbours and beaches.
The sounds are given a break from their usual analysis, where quantitative information about the ocean and its inhabitants is uncovered, and instead allowed to be enjoyed as they are.
David R. Barclay is a professor in the Department of Oceanography at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. His research is centered on modeling and measuring the spatial and temporal properties of ambient noise in the ocean in an effort to study the natural mechanisms that generate underwater sound and the properties and variability of the oceanographic environments through which sound propagates. He has made recordings in the Bay of Fundy, at the bottom of the Mariana Trench, and along the length of the Mississippi.
