About this Event

Join your local community for Reckoning & Remembrance: The Second Line of Memory, an in-person ritual honoring New Orleans’ history. Starting at Beanlandia in Bywater and ending at the Andre Cailloux Center on Bayou Road with live performances and guest speakers. JOIN THE PROCESSION!

A living ceremony of remembrance

This is not a march in the traditional sense. It is a ritual—a living ceremony bringing the community together to reclaim the public memory of New Orleans in the Civil War and Reconstruction, and to rededicate the public memory of our city.

Honoring those who fought

Honor Captain André Cailloux and the 1,800 men of color who were the first to join the Union Army. Come together to honor the brave New Orleanians who joined the fight against slavery and racism.

As America marks its 250th anniversary, remember this history with us.

Agenda

Reckoning & Remembrance Mural Announcement
Host: Beanlandia

Info: Meet us at Beanlandia where the procession will kickoff with a mural announcement by artists Annie Moran and Teneille Prosper with music by Kalindah Laveaux. As part of Reckoning & Remembrance, we have commissioned a permanent mural honoring Captain André Cailloux and the 1,800 free men of color who mustered into the Louisiana Native Guards — a lasting public tribute on the ground where their story began.

🕑: 01:00 PM - 02:00 AM
Building Dedication & Day Party
Host: Andre Cailloux Center

Info: After the Captain André Cailloux Community Procession travels from Beanlandia to the André Cailloux Center, join us at 2541 Bayou Road for a joyful outdoor ceremony honoring the Louisiana Native Guard and celebrating the mural, the history it carries, and the community gathered around it.

The ceremony is planned for approximately 45 minutes to one hour. It will include a blessing, a musical selection by The Maroons Band, and brief remarks from invited speakers. Each speaker will have about two minutes to share.

After the ribbon cutting, guests can either be transported to the Algiers Ancestor Festival or stay for the evening Benefit Concert featuring AJ Haynes
