Recalling Forgotten Memories and Landscape: Painting the Plantation History
Speakers: Chang Yoong Chia, Syarifah Nadhirah
Time: 1 February (Wed), 8pm - 930pm
Venue: Rumah Attap Library & Collective
Language: English (Q&A in Malay or Mandarin welcome)
Malaya was a former colony where rubber, gambir, spices and many other types of cash crops were produced to support the colonial economy for centuries. Artworks of Chang Yoong Chia and Syarifah Nadhirah bring us through a journey of often forgotten plantation history in Malaysia. They remind us of the collective memories, historical moments, landscapes and ecological changes which were buried in the postcolonial period and when the plantation lands were covered and replanted by new cash crops. Their artworks explore how the lives of people at the time were affected by colonial plantations, including changes of lifestyles and social demographic structure. In this forum, we are delighted to have Yoong Chia and Syarifah at Rumah Attap Library to share their research and thought process in curating and producing the works featured in their exhibitions “A Leaf Through History” and “Measure of Seeds”. They will share how they explore our plantation history through different art mediums.
Free entry, donations are welcomed.
Chang Yoong Chia (b. 1975, Kuala Lumpur) graduated from the Malaysian Institute of Art in 1996 with a Diploma of Fine Art in Painting. Chang explores different kinds of materials but with the sensibility of a painter. He focuses on his country of Malaysia - where ethnicity, religion and history are intricately mixed - and stories of individuals living there, and turns them into artworks. Chang’s works ranging from paintings on canvases, painted animal and plant remains and household objects, stamp collages and embroidery explore wide-ranging topics such as politics, religion, culture and nature. The repeated gestures and complex methods reflect a commitment with craft in which the labour adds another layer of meaning to the work. Placing an importance on the material, he believes that each medium has its own characteristics and symbolism thus new interpretations are conjured when found or mundane objects are transformed in an almost alchemical fashion. In 2022 he exhibited his batik series A Leaf through History.
他近期的藝術展是峇迪系列“A Leaf through History”。
Syarifah Nadhirah (b.1993) is a Visual Artist cum Textile Designer based in Malaysia. She mostly experiments in printmaking, watercolor and digital illustrations. Her main interests reside in the cross-pollination of art and science, bridging both with education and awareness. She works on projects focusing on visual documentation of threatened environmental subjects, where she also authored Recalling Forgotten Tastes, an introductory book centred on a garland of edible plants and food from the perspectives of the Indigenous communities in Peninsular Malaysia. Aside from that, she has collaborated with ecologists from Urban Biodiversity Initiative, where they conduct nature education workshops focusing on rediscovery of urban ecology and edible herbs. Currently, she is exploring ideas of memory and matter of plant migration and how some have changed the social and economical outlook of this region.
