Rebetiko Against The Machine (RATM) mag wellicht een vreemde naam zijn voor een rebetiko groep, maar hun muziek spreekt voor zichzelf. Met hun gedeelde passie voor rebetiko en akoestische folk-instrumenten, spelen deze drie Grieken hun originele repertoire met een soort van opstandige houding.
Hun traditionele repertoire is geworteld in het cruciale tijdperk van de jaren 1930 tot 1950, een periode die werd gekenmerkt door de ontberingen van twee wereldoorlogen, die een diepgaande impact hadden op de arbeidersklasse. De behoeften, perspectieven, emoties en overtuigingen van die tijd worden weerspiegeld in de rebetiko-muziek, die vaak wordt beschouwd als de ‘Griekse blues’.
Nu we opnieuw in een tijdperk leven waarin vooral de arbeidersklasse lijdt onder de handen van Big Industry en de neoliberale politiek, streeft RATM ernaar deze intieme en historische elementen van rebetiko hoog te houden, terwijl ze tegelijkertijd hun eigen ervaringen en gezichtspunten in hun teksten en originele composities verwerken. Dus melancholie, opstandigheid en strijdbaarheid gaan hier hand in hand. RATM zet zich ook in voor het behoud van traditionele rebetiko-liederen en deelt de ingebakken kennis en wijsheid daarvan met het publiek.

Melancholic and defiant rebetiko
At first glance Rebetiko Against The Machine (RATM) might be a little strange name for a rebetiko group, but its music says it all. With their united passion for rebetiko and acoustic folk instruments these three Greek musicians play their original repertoire with a kind of militant attitude.
Their traditional repertoire is rooted in the pivotal era of the 1930s to 1950s, a period marked intensely by the hardships of two World Wars, profoundly impacting the working class. The needs, perspectives, emotions, and beliefs of that time are reflected in the rebetiko music, which is often considered as the ‘Greek blues’. Today, living in an era again where especially the working class suffers under the hands of Big Industry and neoliberal politics, RATM strives to uphold these intimate and historical elements of rebetiko, while at the same time infusing their own experiences and perspectives into their lyrics and original compositions. So melancholy and defiance, militancy, go hand in hand.
RATM is also committed to preserving the traditional rebetiko songs, sharing their ingrained knowledge and wisdom with audiences.
