Rebekah Jon, Monica James, Checkered Lillies (Release Show)
--
Michigan native Monica James is a Nashville based songwriter and performer with a classically trained voice that cuts through and stories that stick. She blends country wit, folk honesty, and blues soul into originals that feel real. With live shows under her belt since age 16 and a setlist that spans the 60s to today, Monica makes music that connects across generations. Fans of Brandi Carlile and Joni Mitchell take note.

This may be Checkered Lilies first release but under their cover band alias they have logged over a hundred performances. "From the moment the Checkered Lilies walked on stage, they carried themselves like seasoned performers. Their confidence, chemistry, and individuality come together to create something truly special. Focused, driven, and undeniably talented, they have everything it takes to thrive in the music business.” - Jill Jack (Michigan music legend)
"Whether playing rock, pop, country or soul, or offering their own songs, (they) deliver a sound that will captivate audiences young and old." - Paul Garrod, Courier-Leader Journalist and Van Buren County Fair director
The Checkered Lilies original music project, however, is emotionally raw and vulnerable with songs that blend driving indie-rock arrangements with melodic pop hooks. Their music explores intimacy, resilience, and the messy edges of growing up, delivered with undeniable chemistry and dynamic live energy. Checkered Lilies craft songs meant to connect, turning personal moments into universal anthems that linger long after the last chord.

The Stray is a music and arts cafe located in Grand Rapids, MI. In addition to our craft beer, coffee and wine selection, our kitchen will be open serving our full dinner menu until 9pm! Get here early to snag your favorite seat and grab a bite to eat before the show begins. This show is free to attend, but you can support artists through tips.
The Stray curates a listening room style venue, where performers are front and center, not background entertainment. We frequently ask attendees to silence their phones and keep conversations low out of respect to performers and other audience members.
