Scientism and Science:
Many people claim that faith is believing in spite of the evidence - like believing in Santa Claus - and that science is the only way we can really know whether something is true. In this talk, Mark will explore the difference between ‘science,’ which helps us know so much about the natural world, and the worldview of ‘Scientism,’ which claims that science is the only way we can know that anything is true. He will show that we can justifiably claim to know much more than can be learnt through the scientific method, and that true faith is not just blind, but an informed trust based on that knowledge.
About Mark:
Mark is from South Wales in the UK. He has lived in Whangaparaoa for the last 22 years, since emigrating to NZ in 2002. He has been married to Maria for 33 years, with two married daughters, and three grandchildren. After training in underground coal mining, Mark has enjoyed a long executive career in business, culminating in his role as CEO of the Warehouse Group for five years. He now acts as Professional Director on the board of ASX and NZX listed businesses, private companies and not-for-profits, and is an Executive mentor/coach. Mark came to faith in 2003, through Alpha at Whangaparaoa Baptist. He has since earned a Theology degree from Carey Theological College in Auckland and a MA in Christian Apologetics from Biola University in the USA. He is now a bi-vocational Associate Pastor at Whangaparaoa Baptist, combining this role with his business roles in the marketplace.
