JC Smuts, the Formative YearsConference & Book Launch

The Johannesburg Institute for Advanced Study (JIAS) and the Department of Politics and International Relations, University of Johannesburg, are excited to announce a conference devoted to the formative years of Jan Smuts, to be held at JIAS from 12-14 September, 2024. Following the successful 2023 conference, ‘The Life and Legacy of J.C. Smuts’, this year’s programme will cover Smuts’ involvement in the Second Anglo Boer War, the peace settlement and the incorporation of the two Boer Republics into the British Empire, the creation of the South African Union, the First World War, his intellectual pursuits and beyond.

The conference will also host the launch of Reappraising The Life and Legacy of J C Smuts (ed by David Boucher & Bongani Ngqulunga, UJ Press), with an address by Professor Piet Croucamp. Event details: 13 Sept, 17:00, JIAS. Tea and cakes will be served. A second launch will be held on the Saturday at the Jan Smuts House Museum in Irene (14:00), and will be preceded by a tour of the House at 12:15. Tea and cakes will be served.
