Real Life (1979) at Bottom Feeder Books

Windup Cinema returns to Bottom Feeder Books with Albert Brooks' debut behind the camera, Real Life. In front of (and under) the camera, he plays an egocentric, fun house take on himself. His hotshot director of the same name sets out to document the life of an average American family in Phoenix by embedding himself, crew, and team of doctors within every facet of their day-to-day for maximum authenticity. While this implodes to hilarious effect, the result anticipates the 21st century flurry of reality TV, mockumentary, and stunt comedy that wouldn’t exist in quite the same way without it. Roger Ebert wrote that Real Life “fails so miserably that it lets its audiences down” in a one-star pan, but history has been far kinder to it.
