Event Synopsis:

The current trade disruptions have created serious challenges across the entire economy, so it should be no surprise that they have affected real estate markets too. This session will include presentations from leaders in industry and the academy on how various real estate sectors will be influenced and what strategies market participants might consider. In addition to analysis of residential markets, the session will also consider commercial markets, both from the perspective of landlords and tenants.



About the speakers:

Walid Hejazi is a Professor of Economic Analysis and Policy at the Rotman School of Management, Fellow of the Michael Lee-Chin Family Institute for Corporate Citizenship, and member of the Board of Directors of the David & Sharon Johnston Centre for Corporate Governance Innovation. His research focuses on the development of strategies which enhance the ability of companies to compete in domestic and global marketplaces. He has worked closely with many companies to develop and implement innovative strategies, with a particular focus on the role of leaders in preparing those companies to lead strategic change. He is currently working on a book that analyzes strategies that can mobilize global pools of capital into the development of sustainable infrastructure projects in the developing world. He has also worked extensively with Canadian and foreign governments on the development of policies around foreign investment and international trade and has testified extensively before parliamentary and senate committees. He teaches in Rotman’s MBA, EMBA and custom executive programs, and has delivered lectures in over 30 countries, and is a frequent commentator in the media.

Adam Brueckner is currently the Head of Risk at Oxford Properties Group, having started at Oxford in 2009. In his current capacity, Adam is responsible for Oxford’s Operational and Investment Risk departments, as well as oversight of Oxford’s Research group. Through his career at Oxford, Adam has held various roles in risk, research, global portfolio management and capital allocation. Adam’s primary contributions are to assist Oxford in making informed investment and operational decisions through the provision of risk analysis and perspectives, and supporting Oxford’s strategy and deployment efforts through insightful and actionable research. Prior to joining Oxford, Adam worked in Equity Research for Merrill Lynch, and as a management consultant for a boutique consultancy. Adam has a BASc in Systems Design Engineering from the University of Waterloo, as well as a MASc in Engineering and an MBA from the University of Toronto. Adam is also a CFA charterholder.

Lesley Gibson is the Chief Financial Officer of CT REIT and has over 25 years of real estate and finance experience. Prior to her appointment as Chief Financial Officer, Ms. Gibson held a variety of increasingly senior positions at Choice Properties Real Estate Investment Trust, where she was most recently Chief Accounting Officer, and at Primaris Real Estate Investment Trust, where she was promoted to Executive Vice-President, Finance. Ms. Gibson was also Vice-President, Corporate Reporting at Oxford Properties Group.

Ms. Gibson holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Western University and is a CPA, CA and has completed the Directors Education Program at the Institute of Corporate Directors at the University of Toronto. Also, Ms. Gibson is a member and past Chair of the ICSC Foundation Canada Board of Directors.

Paul Brundage, BA ’87, is a global commercial real estate executive with 35 years of experience across North America, Europe and the Asia Pacific region, based in London, UK and Toronto. He is a Senior Advisor and Non-Executive Director for a number of organizations around the world. He is a member of the both the University of Toronto’s International Leadership Council and Real Estate Advisory Committee.

William Strange is a Professor of Economic Analysis and Policy at the Rotman School. William is currently Editor of Journal of Urban Economics (with Stuart Rosenthal), and he served in 2011 as President of the American Real Estate and Urban Economics Association. He works in the areas of urban economics and real estate. His research has considered agglomeration, industry clusters, labor market pooling, skills, private government, real estate development and real estate investment.
