The first hours of a disaster belong to you. Before the engines arrive, before the shelters open, before anyone official knocks on your door, it's you and whoever is standing in your kitchen. ReadyOrange is one Saturday spent making sure that goes well.

This is a class built for Orange, taught by the people who respond here. We work through the hazards that actually threaten this city — wildfire in the eastern hills, public safety power shutoffs, earthquake, and the flooding that follows a hard winter — and what each one asks of a household. You'll practice shutting off your own utilities. You'll build a kit you'd actually grab instead of one that sits in a closet. You'll leave with a family communication plan that works when the cell network doesn't, and you'll know exactly how the City will reach you and where to go when it's time to leave.

No experience, no equipment, and no background in emergency services required. If you've been meaning to get your household squared away and never quite known where to start, this is where to start.

Bring a neighbor. The households that come through this together are the ones that check on each other afterward — and that's the whole point of doing it as a city rather than one family at a time.

Optional Day 2 — Sunday, October 18: Anyone who attends Saturday can stay for American Red Cross CPR/AED and First Aid certification, also free. Sunday runs as two identical three-hour sessions, morning and afternoon — choose whichever works for you when you register. Seats are limited to 20 per session, so if the certification matters to you, register early.

Where: North Net Training Center, 2400 E. Orangewood Ave., Anaheim. This is a City of Orange class presented by the Orange Fire Department — North Net is the regional fire training facility Orange uses for hands-on instruction, which is why the address is in Anaheim.
