About this Event

About the Lecture:
Winston S. Churchill, who never attended a university, was nonetheless deeply committed to lifelong learning and intellectual development. Through extensive reading in history, military studies, political biography, literature, and even a few aspects of economics and the natural sciences, Churchill cultivated insights and understanding that would later define his political and strategic leadership during times of war and crisis. In this lecture, Dr. Christopher C. Harmon explores the self-education of the young Churchill and the library he amassed during the decades preceding World War II. Drawing from five years of researches for a volume on Churchill’s early ministerial career and growing influence on British military affairs, Dr. Harmon examines the relationship between liberal education, war studies, political understanding, and historical literacy. The lecture connects Churchill’s intellectual development to themes of leadership, strategy, and the enduring importance of reading history. This presentation will interest to students of national security, military strategy, political leadership, and anyone who loves books.
