Reading at the transition from primary to secondary school: What do we know and what can we do?

Despite a widespread assumption that children can read when they leave primary education, nearly 20% of adolescents are not able to read simple texts accurately and with understanding. Most research on reading has focused on children and adults, neglecting the intervening adolescent period. In this presentation, Prof Jessie Ricketts will present research on reading development in adolescence, exploring its link to spoken vocabulary knowledge, socio-economic status and the period when students transition from primary to secondary school. She will also introduce novel approaches to promoting reading in school. Findings will be discussed in relation to their implications for theory as well as educational practice and policy.

About the speaker

Jessie Ricketts is a Professor of Psychology and Vice Dean for Research and Knowledge Exchange at Royal Holloway, University of London in England where she directs the Language and Reading Acquisition (LARA) research group. Jessie has more than 20 years of experience researching language and literacy in children, young people and adults. Jessie is a world expert on teenage reading and is particularly interested in how reading benefits children’s learning and language. Jessie works closely with large networks of researchers, teachers, educational charities and policy makers to conduct research and translate evidence. Jessie regularly provides continuing professional development (CPD) for secondary and primary schools, Multi-academy Trusts and Further Education Colleges that includes actionable recommendations for teachers and schools. Jessie has worked with the Department for Education (DfE), FFT Education and practitioners to develop two CPD programmes for all secondary teachers so that they can support students of all ability levels. Jessie has advised the DfE on the DfE Reading Framework and secondary reading initiatives and contributed to EEF guidance on supporting secondary reading.
