What better way to spend an autumn evening than drinking wine and chatting about short stories. Read Between the Wines is back this October as part of Falmouth Book Festival Fringe. Come, join us!

Read Between the Wines is a book group with a difference. Simultaneously celebrating the art of wordsmithery and the beauty of wine craft, we pair a short story with a selection of three wines and open the floor to taste, discover and discuss.

Amiable and accessible rather than challenging and erudite, it’s a lighthearted, interactive and lively evening, where everyone’s opinions and tastes are welcome.

You’ll get a copy of the story to read beforehand as well as a performance of the story on the night itself. We’ll then draw on the insights and expertise of our resident wine expert who’ll walk us through a tailored tasting, highlighting each wine’s flavour notes, synergies and connections with the story itself.

Our chosen short story for the evening is 'Lone Cypress' by Philip Marsden, featured in Twelve Stories for Twelve Sections (Hermitage, 2024). It's a moving contemplation of growth, change, loss and legacy framed around a family farm and an outgrown cypress tree. With much left unsaid and characters both present and beyond the page to unpick, it promises rich subject matter for discussion, and pairing too!
