About the talk
The talk, 'Reposing the Planter’s Chair' will showcase “Mapping colonialities: A situated history of the Planter’s chair”, a research study being conducted by Rachel Lee and Sarita Sundar, who will present colonial and contemporary meanings and narratives connected to the Planter’s chair through their documentation (shots from films, postcards, photographs, and oral histories) which is a work in progress. The research is being supported with funding from the Dutch Research Organisation, NWO. Joining them is Nikita Bhate presenting a contemporary reimagining of the Planter’s chair, The Āyāma Chair – a low, comfortably wide, lounge chair created by fusing modern manufacturing with traditional techniques - is a collaboration between Nikita Bhate and Pascal Hien.
About the speakers
Rachel Lee - Architect, architectural historian and assistant professor at the Department of Architecture, TU Delft
Sarita Sundar - Designer, design historian and founder of the design consultancy, Hanno, in Bengaluru.
Nikita Bhate – Product designer and Co-founder of Sar Studio, Pune, which presents contemporary, contextual, functional design through the perspective of designers from around the world.
