Experience Stuart Gordon's gloriously twisted 1985 horror-comedy masterpiece that brings H.P. Lovecraft's mad science tale to gleefully gruesome life. When brilliant but obsessed medical student Herbert West develops a serum that can reanimate dead tissue, his experiments at Miskatonic University lead to increasingly horrific - and hilariously disturbing - results.
Jeffrey Combs delivers an iconic performance as the monomaniacal West, creating one of horror's most memorable mad scientists with his precise delivery and manic intensity. Bruce Abbott provides the perfect straight man as Dan Cain, the reluctant partner drawn into West's nightmarish experiments, while Barbara Crampton brings both intelligence and genuine terror to Megan Halsey.
Gordon's fearless direction perfectly balances outrageous gore with pitch-black comedy, creating a film that's simultaneously disgusting and irresistibly entertaining. The practical effects by John Naulin and Anthony Doublin create some of the most memorable (and stomach-churning) zombie mayhem ever captured on film.
David Gale steals scenes as the villainous Dr. Hill, whose decapitated head becomes the film's most unforgettable antagonist. Richard Band's operatic score adds Gothic grandeur to the mayhem, while the film's exploration of scientific obsession and the hubris of playing God gives weight to the splatter.
