About this Event
MA Animation at the Royal College of Art is approaching its 40th anniversary, and at the heart of celebrations are its graduates and their internationally recognised risk-taking, cutting edge works. This symposium emerges from our ongoing work with the RCA Animation Collection, and the main theme of this second day is animation archives and collections.
The symposium will demonstrate a wealth of research processes into animated image-making at the RCA in the past four decades as it continues to challenge conventions, embrace technologies and encourage experimentation. There will be plenty of time for discussion and debate, and film screenings are planned during the event. Speakers include Dr Susan Young, Jez Stewart, Joe King, Rory Waudby-Tolley, Dr Katerina Athanasopouolu, and Prof Suzanne Buchan.
The symposium is organised by MA Animation’s Carla MacKinnon (Tutor Research) and Prof Suzanne Buchan, with support from the RCA RKE Research Development Fund. Screening programmes are curated by Sylvie Bringas.
Talks include
Jez Stewart - RCA Animation in the BFI National Archive
Susan Young - Autoethnographic animation methodologies: The role of the personal archive in rescripting trauma
Dr Katerina Athanasoupoulou - The Archive, the Repertoire, and the Animator Movement as Animation’s Material
Rory Waudby-Tolley - Personal Archives and Digital Landfill
Joe King - Light entertainment
Prof Suzanne Buchan - Hidden in Plain Sight: Working with Archives and Collections
