Joining us as we continue the festival is a treat with Rare Ould Times a traditional three piece band. The Rare Ould Times Biography.
Steve Higgins and I (Lawrence Hoy) formed The Rare Ould Times in 1991 as a duo. We added a fiddle player in 1994.
However, that fiddler left us late in 2016; and we worked with a new fiddler, Conor Eliot. Conor left us to tour with the show ‘Seven Drunken Nights; the Story Of The Dubliners’ which is playing in major theatres throughout Britain and Ireland. Since Conor left, we have worked with fiddlers Tim Marris and Richard Sanderson on a regular basis; and with accomplished harmonica and guitar virtuoso, Gerry Kennedy. When we come to the White Hart, we’ll have with us another tremendous musician, fiddler Chris Galloway.
The Rare Ould Times have played all over the British Isles; but, especially of late, we have concentrated mainly in the North West.
Usually, we concentrate on Irish music - our name is taken from an Irish song, "I Remember Dublin In The Rare Ould Times" by Pete St John (who also wrote ‘The Fields Of Athenry’)
However, we are just as comfortable with several other genres: we’ve played on Lancashire Nights, using several self-penned songs, Sixties Nights, and can also play Country Music.
Steve Higgins is quite a well-known Folk Singer who appears at many Folk Clubs and Festivals up & down the country, always receiving positive reviews.
Lawrence Hoy enjoys recognition in Folk Music circles as an accomplished song-writer with three acclaimed albums to his name. One album, "Beyond The Seas", originally released on vinyl in 1988, had its cd launch on 26th January at The Old Courts, where it was presented as a drama-documentary.
My two other albums are "Lawrence Hoy at The Diggers" which included the self-penned songs I featured at Diggers 2017; the profits from which went to the ‘Doing it for Joan’ fund; and "Lancashire’s Beautiful ", a collection of songs we use on our Lancashire nights. Steve & I put this album together.
