Cross Country has bee a major part of my life for the last 55 years. I have run XC competitively in high school, college and post collegiately. I have also been a meet volunteer, official, race director and XC course administrator. My favorite sport has been kind to me. It has given me so many good friends, a good part of my income and great memories.
I served as the Cross Country Course Administrator at the University of Wisconsin – Parkside for the majority of the past two decades. The UWP Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross Country Course was largely developed by UWP Athletic Director Wayne Dannehl and UWP Cross Country Coach Vic Godfrey. It was one of the first course developed in the United States to handle extremely large fields on a tract of land dedicated to cross country running. Numerous local, state, regional and national competitions have been held on “The Wayne”. The record number of finishers in a single race on the UWPXC course is 674. I truly enjoyed the time I spent maintaining, developing and directing the meets held at the course.
Since I retired from my staff position, I wanted to host a unique event on the course that would also serve as a fund raiser to go directly into the UW-Parkside fund that is dedicated to the maintenance, restoration and development of the Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross Country Course. I decided to start the Ranger Mixed XC Relay, which is a coed relay event (male, female, male, female) with each team member running a 3000 leg.
The Mixed Relay was an event in the 2024 World Cross Country Championships last March in Serbia. Based on my research, this is the first such event being conducted in the USA utilizing the World Athletics format. UW-Parkside Cross Country, Wisconsin USATF and Performance Running Outfitters have partnered with me to host this unique event.
The race will be Sunday, November 10th, the week after the WIAA State Meet. The Green Bay Packers have also opted to have their bye week the weekend of the relay, so you wouldn’t miss the game because you are running. I urge you to check the event out at: https://runsignup.com/Race/WI/Kenosha/WisconsinCoedXCRelay
If you can not run please consider making a tax deductible donation to the course at: https://runsignup.com/Race/Donate/WI/Kenosha/WisconsinCoedXCRelay I have made the first donation to the event in memory of my good friend Coach Bill Greiten. Bill helped develop the high school courses at UWP, as well as recruiting the volunteer staff to run the major meets on the course.
I am extremely excited about this event. It could be the start of a new race tradition in USA XC. I hope you can join in and be part of it.
