Despite BGE's already high rates and excessive profits, BGE filed for a $156 million rate increase and an increase on their profit rate on July 2nd, 2026. While this rate increase is electric only, the company has given no indication it plans to change course on wasteful spending on gas pipeline infrastructure which is driving high gas delivery rates.
We are calling on our utility regulators at the Public Service Commission to stop BGE's wasteful capital spending and DECREASE their profit rate.
Join us for a rally and press conference August 11th, before the Public Service Commission's first hearing on this rate increase request. We'll have coffee, water, and donuts to share. If you are able, please also join us for the hearing at 11am.
What will we be doing?
Rallying against BGE's proposed rate hike. The goal is to give TV stations and newspapers images of opposition for ongoing coverage of the rate hike filing. After the rally, we will walk together to the PSC a couple of blocks away to attend the 11am procedural hearing.

Why is this important?
BGE electric delivery rates have nearly doubled since 2010, increasing at about twice the rate of inflation. And BGE has tripled its gas delivery rates since 2010. These rate hikes are driven by a combination of increased capital spending and a high profit rate, including BGE's Operation Pipeline Program to replace gas pipelines. BGE argues that this work is necessary for safety, but a recent Maryland PIRG Foundation analysis suggests that Operation Pipeline prioritizes gas infrastructure expansion over risk reduction.
Meanwhile, BGE is struggling with persistent challenges around customer service and safety. Customers are paying more and getting less.
Instead of spending billions of dollars on a failing program that locks us into burning polluting fossil fuels far into the future, we can make BGE address pressing safety risks, stop raising our gas bills, and start taking meaningful action to transition to clean energy homes.
