Join us for a powerful rally to stand up for love, equality, and the rights of all Coloradans! The El Paso County Democratic Party LGBTQ+ Outreach Committee, in collaboration with Freedom to Marry Colorado, is hosting a community rally at Acacia Park on Sunday, September 29, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM.This event supports the upcoming 2024 ballot measure to amend the Colorado Constitution and repeal the ban on same-sex marriage. By repealing Amendment 43, we can remove this discriminatory ban and affirm the right of all people to marry whom they love. The ballot question will ask voters: “Shall there be an amendment to the Colorado Constitution to remove the ban on same-sex marriage?”
We are thrilled to welcome a diverse lineup of speakers, including elected officials, community leaders, and advocates for LGBTQ+ rights, who will share their stories and discuss the importance of this measure for equality and justice in Colorado.
Why This Matters:
Recent statements from U.S. Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito suggest that the Court may be open to revisiting the landmark decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, which guaranteed the right to same-sex marriage. Justice Thomas has argued that “the same rationale that the Supreme Court used to declare there was no right to abortion... should also be used to overturn cases establishing rights to contraception, same-sex consensual relations, and same-sex marriage.”
If LGBTQ+ couples lose the right to marry, they will also lose crucial benefits like hospital visitation rights, access to healthcare coverage, and social security and tax benefits. In this country, every individual has the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The government should not dictate who can marry and must not ban people from deciding how to live their lives. By repealing Amendment 43, we protect these fundamental freedoms and ensure that all loving couples in Colorado have the right to marry.
