Join us for a conversation on economic mobility and housing justice featuring economist Raj Chetty
About this Event

Earlier this year, economist Raj Chetty and Opportunity Insights published a consequential report examining the long-term impact of replacing large public housing developments with mixed-income communities, a federal program known as HOPE VI. One of the largest and most ambitious efforts to break up urban concentrations of poverty in U.S. history, HOPE VI transformed communities. With over $17 billion in public and private investments made across decades, the program—not without controversy—demolished or rehabilitated over 250 public housing projects, and developed new, mixed-income neighborhoods across the country.

Presented by the National Public Housing Museum in collaboration with the Chicago Community Trust and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, Chetty’s talk will share data and insights from his latest findings on how revitalized neighborhoods impact children’s long-term trajectory.

Chetty will be joined in conversation with Marisa Novara, Vice President of Community Impact at The Chicago Community Trust and former Commissioner of the Chicago Department of Housing, and Salin Geevarghese, President of SGG Insight and former HUD Deputy Assistant Secretary, for a timely conversation about the pitfalls and possibilities of mixed income communities, the redress of racial and economic segregation and the future of housing justice.
